PORTS & TOWNSin theWILSONS PROMONTORY COASTAL ZONE |
PORT FRANKLIN - Home to both commercial and recreational fishermen. There are numerous mooring jetties along the winding Franklin River - an evocative setting for the artist, especially at sunset
PORT WELSHPOOL - many commercial fishermen use this busy port which has its own fish processing factory. Recreational fishing is enjoyed from the long jetty or by boat from the boat ramp. It has an excellent maritime museum
BARRY BEACH - this port is not accessible to the public. From here the gas rigs in Bass Strait are supplied & serviced. From Yanakie large ships can often be seen coming through the channel & at dock. Plan are afoot (at time of writing 2005) to increase current usage & size of the port.
PORT ALBERT - to the east of Corner Inlet & Port Welshpool - first settled in 1841, the township developed rapidly and was a bustling port until the 1870's when road and rail links caused its decline. Many of the old buildings have been renovated, including the oldest licensed hotel in Victoria. With safe harbour and good fishing, it is a favourite spot for fishermen. The closest town is Alberton.
